Come and See

I've been reading Angie Smith's book Chasing God.
In one part she describes the meeting of Jesus and his first disciples, John, Andrew and Simon. They encounter Jesus and it's as though they are "so moved by His presence that they simply started walking."
They just started following right behind Him.

No questions asked about where He was going, no idea of the plan or the destination or how long it's going to take to get there.

Shortly after, Jesus turns around and asks them "what do you want?" and they respond with another question, "Rabbi, where are you staying?" (John 1:35-38)

I see myself here in their response, eager to follow but desiring a little more information about the game plan. I want to know the answers to the where, when, how questions that flutter around in my head.

This doesn't come from a place of distrust.
I do. I trust where God is leading me, I trust Jesus whom I am following...
But where specifically am I being lead? What's around the corner?

I like to be in the know but future stuff has the tendency to just feel like a big question mark. Like I'm chasing after God instead of walking with Him. Searching for the answers, trying to know the unknowable future. Shaking things around like a magic eight ball looking for clues that I'm on the right path.

I've blogged about this before. Where am I supposed to go? What's going to happen this year? How can I prepare for what's around the corner? Where am I going to be in five years? Who will I be in ten?

Jesus answers "come and you will see." (John 1:39)

So that's just what I'm gonna do.
I'm gonna talk and write about my daydreams, the excitement, the plans, life right now, and where I hope it's going, but with a rooted understanding that God is in control, he guides my future, where he calls I will follow.

And I don't know all the answers and I never will until I reach my heavenly home.
But every day I am feeling more peace about the journey, my walk, and the timing of each step.

  2. I love this. I think most of us want to know the game plan and just walking it out day by day is something that requires intention. Love you my sweet girl! I have known from the moment I first laid eyes on you that God has something amazing for you. Have a nice walk!

  3. I remember something my husband taught our youth group when he was a youth pastor. He said you don't need to worry about where you will be in 10 years. As long as you walk with Jesus every day, He will have you exactly where you are supposed to be in 10 years. I thought that was excellent advise.

You know, if we knew where we were going to be 10 years from today, it might scare us to death to think about. But following Him each day means we'll be ready to face or do whatever it is He asks when the time comes. That gives me some peace and I hope it does you too.

  4. I had the opportunity to meet and hear Angie Smith on the Sandi Patty cruise a few weeks ago. The experience was amazing, and Angie is one of my favorites. She says we should not pray meekly, but with confidence as a strong and much-loved child of the living King! He will never leave us or forsake us. May you have peace (and patience) in your walk with Him. God bless you!

  5. Faith is all about not seeing the next step, or phase. If we could see God's plan, we would probably try to change it, and we'd mess it up! Joyce is right (is she your mom?) that we all long to see what's down the road. That's not how God works though, his ways are not our ways. But, to know he is trustworthy - that's the key. His plan, his direction will be for our good.
I'm popping in from A-Z, and I'm so happy to find your blog, b/c I love finding other believers in the blogosphere! I write about faith too, but not exclusively, on my blog, Adventures in the Ballpark.
