Shannon's Summer Workout

So in a previous post I wrote about how I don't really exercise... at all (basically shopping is my cardio). Now it's not that I don't like the way I look but I have been feeling pretty lethargic and just plain out of shape. I used to do ballet and since I stopped that I really have not worked out (in about 4 years ago). Now I eat more than my fair share of junk food, and I LOVE candy. Fortunately I am very blessed to have a speedy metabolism and I never picked up the freshmen 15. But regardless of how I look on the outside, I know that my body probably could use a recharge. I think exercising would help me have more energy, feel healthier, and I've heard good things about endorphins.

So here is my plan. I think most people limit exercise to running or lifting weights, but I hate running and I especially don't like running in place on a treadmill or elliptical machine. Instead I want to try swimming and yoga. Swimming is really good cardio and yoga is good for pretty much everything! The PAC (physical activity center) on campus has a pool and it has group exercise classes. Yoga is on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:30-6:30 starting June 8th and the pool is open in the evenings from 5 -8.

Yesterday was my first day of swimming. I only did 15 laps (and by 15 I mean 14) which isn't even a quarter of a mile but this was the first exercise I've done in basically 4 years. Today I am going to try to do 18 laps which is a quarter of a mile. I'm going to take it slow and work up to a mile! Wish me luck!

Confession: I bought a nose plug (much to my sister's embarrassment) because I tend to inhale a lot pool water. Believe me, a nose plug is a lot less embarrassing than coming out of the water and belching really loudly (which is what I use to do when I was younger, ask anyone in my family).

  3. Good luck with your exercise program. It sounds like a good plan. Keep up the good work. I enjoy walking for exercise. Love & blessings from NC!
