Hot and Crabby
Picking up where my last post left off... We met up with my mom and dad in Annapolis on Saturday and had just the best time even thought it was brutally hot. We strolled along main street and checked out the boats docked along the pier, ducking in and out of stores for relief along the way. I love Annapolis' brick streets and row houses and the waterfront and I'm glad I got show that part of Maryland to TJ. He's a South Carolina boy and Annapolis has a very Southern feel to it.
We took a much needed break from the heat at one of my favorite spots, McGarvey's, and got a pre-crab feast snack of crab dip and my favorite garlicky mussels. It's dark and cool in there and we geared ourselves up before heading back out in the sun to visit the Naval Academy. The grounds and the architecture of the Naval Academy are beautiful and even kept this army boy interested-although none of us envied the plebes walking around in full uniform that day. Again more shade hunting and AC seeking ensued before we'd had enough of the heat and headed back to our cars and onto my favorite part of the day... Cantler's.
Cantler's has the best crabs! There is always a waiting list and it is always worth it. Fortunately you can enjoy a beer in the parking lot while you wait. They have seating inside but we prefer to sit on the deck (under an umbrella) and enjoy the breeze off the water. We were still sweating but we were well rewarded for our efforts. Have you ever seen anything better looking than that big platter of old bay covered crabs? All I know is my summer is not complete until I've gotten to enjoy crabs.
In between banging our mallets on the claws, breaking open the back fin, and picking all that delicious meat off the shell, my parents got to know TJ a little better. He fits in just fine! Fortunately he's a talker like the rest of us- you kind of have to be in order to get a word in with our family- and just as easy going as can be. It was such a fun, albeit too short, visit as usual. Next month TJ will be in Washington state for a new rotation so I am really glad we we're able to make this weekend happen. He definitely gets the stamp of approval (and so did those crabs).
(p.s. All these photos are from my mom so if you read her blog than I apologize for the duplicates- it was just too dang hot to be fooling with a camera.)

Hi Shannon!
ReplyDeleteI've been a long-time follower and finally wanted to stop lurking. I LOVE your blog, and find that I connect with it immensely. I've lived in England, led Young Life in college, am starting work in a law firm this fall, and was an ADPi to boot! Anyway, I just wanted to say that I'm glad you're having such a happy summer and to let you know you have a reader out there who just gets a lot of the things you write about! Have a great night!!

ReplyDeleteOkay, I'm from PA and Annapolis is one of my FAVORITE cities ever :) There is just something so quaint about it--and I'm so jealous you got to eat crabs! Since moving to Florida, I have been so deprived of Maryland crabs. The ones down here just aren't the same. Ps. your dress is super cute!
ReplyDeleteHi Kristyn! Thanks for your comment! Hope you get some Maryland crabs in the near future even though Florida still has great seafood!
DeleteSo, you are dating a South Carolinian! Smart girl!! (I live in Pawleys Island, SC and love it here.) I also lived in Maryland in the past: Baltimore and Frederick. I Hodgepodge with your Mom and so enjoy checking in with the daughters sometimes too.
ReplyDeleteHi Marla! Glad you approve ;) I am a big fan of South Carolina and hope to move back down there some day. I love Pawleys Island. It's just such a pretty state. Thanks for popping by.
DeleteWhen I lived in DC I LOVED visiting Annapolis! :) It is such a lovely city on the water!! :) This brought back such happy memories! I agree with Kristyn- your dress is super cute!! :)
