I've Got Sunshine

Sometimes the metro isn't all bad. It's rare but true.

Occasionally I walk down to my station after work and get to enjoy this:

{If the video doesn't appear, here is the YouTube link.}

Please excuse the poor quality. I took it on my phone and metro insists on keeping their stations really dark. Probably an attempt to hide their many flaws and the rats.

I'm not sure who "that girl" is in their song. They certainly weren't singing to me. But it did make waiting for my delayed and crowded train much more enjoyable.

weekend

This past weekend I was in town but not at home. I ended up staying the entire weekend at a friend's house in the city celebrating a visiting-out-of-town friend's birthday. The weekend included a house warming party, brunch followed by naps and movies on the couch, an 80's cover band concert and more brunch.

I just love brunch, it might be my favorite meal of the day. I ate so well this weekend. If you're in D.C and looking for some yummy places to try here's what I enjoyed:

Ulah Bistro for dinner Thursday night
Busboys and Poets for brunch Saturday morning
Tonic for brunch Sunday morning

More on the 80's cover band now.

They're called The Legwarmers and they were amazingly fun! We got dressed up in bright neons, side pony tails, gold lamé shorts and fanny packs. We agreed that the 80's was probably rolling over in it's grave at the poor imitation of it's style but since I was barely born in the 80's I don't have any true fashion pieces to do it justice. There were plenty of people in crazy mullet wigs sporting Guitar Hero guitars and cut off jean vests and lots of legwarmers of course.
They played awesome songs, I knew almost every single one and had so much fun dancing like a fool to Your Love/Sweet Child of Mine/ Africa/ Hit Me With Your Best Shot/Shook Me All Night Long/ Total Eclipse of the Heart/Summer of '69/Footloose/ We're Not Gonna Take It.

Sadly the girl in the neon tutu had to return to South Carolina yesterday and I had to return to my house and return to work today :(

In other news, I'm bringing back the fanny pack. It can hold so many things and is basically the same as a cross body bag except it goes around your waste.

Do More

I have settled into a comfortable routine in D.C: wake up, go to work, come home, eat dinner, do nothing, go to bed, rinse, repeat.

One day, I want to look back on my time in D.C (pretty sure I won't live up here forever) and remember all the stuff I did. All the amazing things I was a part of. How I was changed and shaped by the people I knew and the places I went and experiences I had.

Adventures and dreams do not grow from the couch.

What do I want?

This is the time in my life when I can ask myself that question and not feel selfish. Yes I have responsibilities like the small matter of there being bills to pay, but when else am I going to be this independent and free?

thank you cards

Just had to share this awesome deal: Hurry over to Tiny Prints for 50% off all thank you cards!!

I'll admit...

I have been very stubborn and slow about jumping on the e-reader train. I was decidedly anti e-reader. I was proud of my big books that I haul around in my purse and stack up high on my bedside table.

Plus, owning an e-reader meant I might never fulfill my dream of a home library with floor to ceiling books and a rolling ladder, a fireplace and a comfy chair with a place to set a cup of tea and read away the hours.

Now I have to bite my tongue- For my birthday my parents got me a Nook Tablet... and it is so pretty! I am loving it.

I think it can hold some crazy number of books, like we're talking 12,000 books people!! Plus I can get on the internet, watch netflix and all that jazz too!

You all know I suffer through the metro every day to work and back so this is just perfect. Plus, I'm not sure if you've noticed, but I've been travelling A LOT lately. And carrying a load of books in my suitcase does not leave me enough room for shoes and my hot rollers.

Over the weekend my 12 year old cousin gave me a run-down of all the tricks. He and I can now"lend" books to each other and he already downloaded all 7 Harry Potter's onto my Nook-for free!

So, while I will never relinquish my dream of that perfectly wonderful in-home library and while I'll never stop buying actual books to build said library, I am falling more and more in love with my Nook with every "fake" turn of the page. Thanks mom and dad!!

What are you reading these days? Want to be "Nook friends?" I've already gotten some great suggestions thanks to my mom directing traffic to my blog. But please send me more recommendations for books that I simply must download!

Another one bites the dust.

on the eve of 24

I just can't quite wrap my head around the fact that I am going to be 24 tomorrow. I have this fear that I'm going to be hit with a wave of unfinished business because you're supposed to have stuff figured out by your mid twenties right?

Leaving 23 behind is ok with me though. Peter is coming in to town tonight for a few days to celebrate and be close by. I'm so excited to see him when I get home from work. And I am excited for this whole new year of life. A birthday is something I will not ever take for granted- that's one lesson I can take away from this past year.

I've kinda been in a holding pattern for a while and I can just feel it, big life, right around the corner of 23 and I'm going after it.
